SMS 2003 SP3 Beta: First Look!
Many of us are wondering what's to come in SMS 2003 SP3. I had the opportunity to install SP3 today and get a glance of the new features. I thought I would share what I saw and let you know how the beta is looking in case you have not had the opportunity to see for yourself. Everything is subject to change as the RTM version is released.
Welcome to the start of the next release of SMS! If you run SMS in your organization, bookmark the site and come back to learn more on SP3 and the next release, SCCM 2007!
SMS Installed version: 2.50.4200.3000 Build #4200
1. The install process is just about the same as any other. I was using a lab for testing and started off with SMS 2003 SP1, upgraded to SP2, the installed SP3 Beta. Here are a few interesting new shots of the install.

During the install, you are prompted to install Asset Intelligence (AI) which is what Asset Matrix sold to Microsoft to add to SMS. You have to click the browse button to the folder with the .csv Excel files. By the way, "AI" has 320,000 some odd applications in the DB so far!
YEA BABY!!!

Another shot of the install process of SP3 AI function..
2. Default support for Vista in collections... YEA BABY!!!

3. 35 NEW reports just on Asset Management (AI).. VERY NICE!!

4. New classes in the .MOF file... All classes look like they are working with AI... There are several new classes that I have seen such as Add Remove Programs(64), AutoStart Software, Installed Software, Installed Software MS, System Console Usage, System Console User and a few others on Vista clients!

5. Vista Client Push fails with the Firewall running... more to come on that.... remove the firewall and everything works for now.

6. A nice new icon for the SMS Admin Console on Vista machines.. look at the sweet new look of the MMC as well!!

7. New log files on clients.. AssetAdvisor.log

8. SMS Reports fail on Vista Clients! I'm sure that will be fixed by RTM..

9. The SMS SP3 console runs GREAT on Vista (other than reports). The SMS tools I use on XP machines works great without issue.
I'm sure it won't be long before I get a chance to make a blogcast on the install and what to look out for.. Keep an eye out looking for updates!
