Secondary sites cannot be detached and re-attached.

However since secondary sites are stateless (they don't have any real objects like packages, advertisements, collections, etc... from themselves, there should be no harm in just re-installing these secondary sites.

Great post. Your solution appears to work well.

I have a question though. After attaching the new SMS 2003 Site as a child site to the exisiting SMS 2003 Site, and allowing all the information to replicate to the new site, we have ran all of your scripts. The Folders are created perfectly along with the folder membership etc. However, the new site has not been setup as a Distribution Point for any of the replicated packages. Is your transition supposed to deal with this or has it been left out for a reason??

Thanks in advance,

There is not much documentation available about the FSP. I have a question about the placement of the FSP.

In my lab I have these testing results. If you want the clients to find the FSP in Active Directory, you have to create the FSP for every site that hosts clients (= site that has a boundary and act a default management point) in the hierarchy. Only those FSP's can register themselves in AD.

The client installation (ccmsetup without parameters) then will find his FSP in AD.

You could place the FSP on the Central Site but it doesn't look like best practice to me. You could use the FSP switch after ccmsetup for the client installation to point to the Central Site server. But what happens when you want to change the FSP to another server of if you upgrade the site to native mode which doesn't accept http anonymous traffic anymore? The FSP won't work anymore. Then you want to move the FSP role to another server but how do you instruct your clients to point to the new server? Some registry setting? There is no entry for it in the Microsoft SCCM policy templates.

If you use the information from AD, you won't have this problem.

My question is: for every site in our hierarchy we plan to have a SUP (Software Update Point) on seperate servers. Would those SUPs be a good place to setup the FSP role also? Or will the SUP also change to https when you go to native mode?

Regards,

Bob
