The sale of Mini portable PC is increasing every month and
these types of machines running with a Linux operating system known,
innovative and whose disibution is provided by Microsoft
Microsoft distribute Xandros Linux
Agreement on intellectual property, technological cooperation and
marketing alliance, the two companies announced a partnership similar
to the one signed between Microsoft and Novell.
Microsoft
will he become the largest distributor of the Linux operating system?
Seven months after the partnership with the American Novell, a new
agreement signed this time with Xandros, the American company that
publishes the Linux distribution of the same name, seems to indicate.
Version client and server version
At the conclusion of this agreement for five years, Microsoft is
committed to market to its customers distributions Xandros Desktop (for
desktops) and Xandros Server (for servers). On a technical level, the
two companies will also improve the interoperability of their
respective server software (interoperability servers and management
systems).
Xandros will also, through its distribution Desktop
converters to make the bridge between the Open XML format, proprietary
format used in Microsoft Office 2007 and ODF (open document format)
format used in the free office suite Open Office.
Finally,
the two companies signed a non-aggression pact which excludes one or
the other commits a trial related to intellectual property covering
patents implemented to ensure the interoperability of their products.
Concern for the community "open source"
The agreement is similar to the one signed with Novell: on the one
hand, the Redmond company sells Suse Enterprise Server to its customers
on the other, it will not pursue Novell for questions intellectual
property. The partnership is in addition to the one reached last
November with Zend, publisher of specialist language open source PHP.
All these reconciliations confirmed, if necessary, the essential place
occupied now open source software in the enterprise. They should not
reassure the open source community, worried that the software giant
offer our customers the means to protect themselves against a possible
legal offensive that could lead to large scale against free software.

Accord de propriété intellectuelle, coopération technologique et alliance marketing, les deux sociétés ont annoncé un partenariat similaire à celui signé entre Microsoft et Novell.
Microsoft va-t-il devenir le principal distributeur du système d'exploitation Linux ? Sept mois après le partenariat conclu avec l'américain Novell, un nouvel accord signé cette fois avec Xandros, la société américaine qui édite la distribution Linux du même nom, paraît l'indiquer.
Version client et version serveur
Au terme de cet accord conclu pour cinq ans, Microsoft s'engage à commercialiser auprès de ses clients les distributions Xandros Desktop (pour les PC de bureau) et Xandros Server (pour les serveurs). Sur un plan technique, les deux sociétés vont également améliorer l'interopérabilité de leurs logiciels serveurs respectifs (interopérabilité des serveurs et des gestionnaires de systèmes).
Xandros fournira en outre, via sa distribution Desktop, des convertisseurs permettant de faire le pont entre le format Open XML, format propriétaire de Microsoft utilisé dans Office 2007, et ODF (open document format), format utilisé dans la suite bureautique libre Open Office.
Enfin, les deux entreprises ont signé un pacte de non-agression qui exclut que l'un ou l'autre engage un procès lié à la propriété intellectuelle portant sur les brevets mis en oeuvre pour assurer l'interopérabilité de leurs produits.
Inquiétude de la communauté « open source »
L'accord ressemble à s'y méprendre à celui signé avec Novell : d'un côté, la firme de Redmond commercialise Suse Enterprise Server auprès de ses clients, de l'autre, elle s'engage à ne pas poursuivre Novell pour des questions de propriété intellectuelle. Le partenariat s'ajoute à celui conclu en novembre dernier avec Zend, éditeur spécialiste du langage open source PHP.
Tous ces rapprochements confirment, s'il le fallait, la place incontournable qu'occupent désormais les logiciels libres dans l'entreprise. Ils ne devraient toutefois pas rassurer la communauté open source, inquiète de voir le géant des logiciels proposer à ses clients les moyens de se protéger contre une éventuelle offensive juridique qu'il pourrait mener à grande échelle contre les logiciels libres.
