A Cornucopia of Scripting Resources for the IT Pro
Wednesday, November 14, 2007 10:09 AM

I hate to script. There I said it. I am a GUI-lover. That being said, I also know the power of scripting and automation can be a tremendous time-saver. That's why I try to script whenever I can. And here are some killer resources for the scripting IT Pro.

  1. Script Center All-in-One Script Center All-in-One features over 160 scripting-related articles collected in a single .CHM file. This collection features all of the Tales From the Script, Office Space, and Scripting Clinics columns, plus much, much more. And if that's not enough, then download the Hey, Scripting Guy! and Sesame Script archives as well.
  2. Sesame Script, 2005-2007 The complete collection of Sesame Script, the beginning scripting column published each month in the TechNet Script Center. All the columns published in the past two years (through the September, 2007 edition) have been collected in a fully-searchable help file, with individual topics arranged by category.
  3. Hey, Scripting Guy! Archive: Volume 2 (2004-2007) The first three years of the Hey, Scripting Guy! column (give or take a month) gathered together in one fully-searchable archive. This HTML help file includes all the text, graphics, and hyperlinks for well over 800 Hey, Scripting Guy! columns.

Exchange 2007 Design and Architecture at Microsoft
Tuesday, November 13, 2007 7:42 PM

I love these white papers from "How Microsoft Does IT." Obviously these guys are very skilled and knowledgeable when it comes to deploying their own technology. The insight you get is invaluable and really comes in to play when designing your own installations.

From the web site:

Ever wondered how a large enterprise plans and implements design and architecture of its next generation of messaging system? View this content to find out how engineers from the Microsoft IT messaging team will uncover the details on how Exchange 2007 infrastructure was introduced and fully deployed in a 120,000+ mailbox production environment. Topics will include: messaging topology design, hardware planning for various Exchange server roles, Client Access Server and Mobility scenarios, Transport architecture, Mailbox server and storage designs, backup, restore and high availability strategies.

TechNet Edge: Framework is Up

edge

For a few days now there have been some posts concerning the new Microsoft community site for IT Pros, TechNet Edge. I decided to give the URL a try today and saw some of the framework is in place. I was hoping for something more along the lines of Channels 8,9,10 and Mix - fresh, energetic and design forward. I will hold judgement until the release, this could be a comp, but apparently IT Pros are people that hang out in a graffiti ridden park ... we might be "on the edge" but are we "edgy"? Long, can you whip up something killer for us IT Pros?

Exchange Server 2007 Component Architecture
Wednesday, November 07, 2007 5:47 PM

Microsoft TechNet Magazine has released another excellent architectural diagram for one of Microsoft's "back office" systems. This time Exchange 2007 is up to bat and this diagram has all the under the covers goods like Client Access, Edge, Transports and Clustering. Download this bad boy and head on over to your local large format printer (or Kinkos). Previous versions have also come enclosed in the latest issue of TechNet Magazine. As of the last issue this one hasnt shown yet, but perhaps it will in a future issue. Previous posters have included Windows Server 2003 Active Directory, Windows Server 2008 and Windows Server 2008 Active Directory.

Coming Soon: TechNet Edge
Wednesday, November 07, 2007 4:46 PM

Keith Combs of the Microsoft Across America team hinted at it and then Eileen Brown, Evangelism Manager from the UK confirmed it. TechNet Edge will soon be upon us. No official launch date or URL has been announced yet and even Eileen seems to be unworthy of a preview. I guess the team is keeping things close to the vest. The site is rumored to be the IT Pro version of Channels 8, 9 and 10 which are sites which build Developer community at Microsoft. I, for one, have been keen for this type of thing to happen for quite a while now. Hopefully it will see the internal support and resources that those other sites see and wont be a "wanna-be on a shoestring budget." Stay tuned for details.

Update: Keith's comments point out a link to Edge.
