p.s. Keep the cost of living in mind. Simple salary is not a good indicator of fair remunteration. Benefits are key as well.

It's a tough choice, I know, and I don't have kids, so I may not entirely relate. But a good living can be made in our industry. For longevity, skills are what counts, and that's good for the family.

Stein

I agree with your points, but I'm looking at a scenario for a business with 50-75 desktops. If you add up the cost for getting Software Assurance, and then MDOP, it's not cheap for companies in that size range. Same holds true for purchasing 50-75 licenses of ThinApp. I don't know the pricing for the other competing products (SVS, XenApp, etc.). But cost is only one aspect I mentioned.

The bigger issue is marketing. Hardly any marketing is being made for App-V or ThinApp at this point. Most everything is focused on Hyper-V and ESX. When I met with those reps, that's all they talked about, even though they also represent app-v products. If I asked any questions about them I got the look of "why do you care about that stuff?" and they would move on.

I agree that Windows 7 is likely to have App-V support built-in. It makes sense. That would eliminate the concerns over application compatibility that plagued Vista adoption. Businesses would definitely pay attention to that feature. But only if it is marketed to them appropriately. The technology is fantastic. The PR is lame.

re: What's Holding Back Application Virtualization?

We are not that serious, or at least I hope not. Either way, the cost for App-V products are reasonable. For as long as I can remember companies like Wise and InstallShield have been profiting out the rear and we have all been subject to those costs. Now, a similar process, but unique like App-V is beginning to be addopted and truely untegrated into the infrastructure and it's worth every penny if you ask me. The new 4.5 release of Microsoft's Application virtulization is going to be the new way of having applications installed on your computer. Windows 7 is being developed with the ability to host applications in the virtulized drive by default. Just like Vista was made with the ability to configure NAP even before Server 2008 was released. Just open the MMC snap-in and look for the NAP snap-in. It's been there since before Vista went RTM.

The future will be App-V if Microsoft can pull it off. Why do any of you think it's not called SoftGrid anymore? App-V is a generic name for how all applications can be installed and at a cost to all of us. It's not cheap, but no more expensive than the traditional solutions both you and I mention.

SCCM and R2 have now unlocked the potential of App-V in the organization. More people will adopt this as a base as time goes on and next thing we know, we will forget the days of msiexec.exe. Now that virtuilized applications can be inventntoried by SCCM, this is a huge improvement from SoftGrid.

I really hope the W7 team finds a smooth way to split Windows 7 into a "home" and "business" package. The problem most businesses have with Vista is that they see it as more of a home/personal product than a business product. Even with Jerry Seinfeld doing their pitching, they need to address that perception.

Regardless, I'm as eager as ever to get my hands on W7 when it goes alpha or beta (if they let me) and see what they do with it.

The problem in our field of System Center, there is a TON coming out all the time and you need to know everything from the workstataion inners to the server and domain functionality and everything in between.
