Links for Shutdown day.

Posting these links on Shutdown day is just a coincidence.
I'm not a person who is unfriendly to the environment.

Fact: In our house my lovely Brazilian wife, Leticia, and myself do all we can to teach our three children to be conservative.
We do not waste any food, we recycle everything and we make it a point to have near zero trash at the end of each week.
This has turned into a family activity that we all enjoy.
I've added a photo of the kids to my Photos page.

And now our regularly scheduled program... Smile

Great Espresso on the job

No tricks, this Blog post is about making really good Espresso at work.
I've been a developer for several companies where an Espresso machine was not allowed.
That always made sense to me, from a safety standpoint, I didn't mind.

But what if you can create a really great cup of Espresso at work safely, in less than 10 minutes?

First of all you absolutely must start with good water.
Do all you can to filter your water at work or bring in your own clean water for this.
Something I did was to use those handy pitcher filters from Brita.

Next you need a good source of fresh beans and a grinder.
You do not need an expensive burr grinder for this, we're going to grind course.
At home you will always benefit from a good quality burr grinder, one that can create a consistent fine ground.

As you may have seen in one of my previous posts I prefer the Code Brown blend from http://www.coffeeemergency.com/espresso.php

OK, now that you have your fresh water, beans and a grinder...
How are we going to get this all together at work with only a Microwave oven to cook with?

The answer is the AeroPress!
http://www.amazon.com/AeroPress-Coffee-and-Espresso-Maker/dp/B000GXZ2GS/

I guarantee it will be the best $25 you've spent at work.
The instructions included are easy to follow.

For great Espresso while traveling or when at work it can't be beat.

Note: I'm not getting any sort of kickback for mentioning these products.
In all honesty I'm simply sharing a great tip for you Espresso lovers, for when you're away from your machines.

Please let me know if you try the things I mentioned, I'd love to hear from you.

People are contacting me asking more about how to make "good Espresso".
Gosh, I'm more than happy to share the labor of my love.
In a few days I'll be posting an article for Developers who want to make really great Espresso at work.

ASP.NET Dynamic Data Preview

Oh man! This bit of news Rocks!

Scott Guthrie just announced today that the ASP.NET team has released an updated ASP.NET Dynamic Data Preview.
http://weblogs.asp.net/scottgu/archive/2008/04/10/asp-net-dynamic-data-preview-available.aspx

Read about the changes, and download the releases:
http://code.msdn.microsoft.com/dynamicdata

My favorite improvements are for LINQ and the awesome ListView component.
Something that will probably excite a lot of developers is the Dynamic Data Website Wizard.

Notice in the bottom section of Scott's article he has posted links to Screen Casts and other helpful resources.
A good place to get help all day long is the ASP.NET Dynamic Data Forum:
http://forums.asp.net/1145.aspx

There are Dynamic Data samples on MSDN:

Silverlight Screen Cast of the Dynamic Data Wizard:

SharePoint SUSHI

Codeplex rocks! Wink

SharePoint SUSHI – It’s not raw fish!

A Good Clink and a Link about a neat little open source SharePoint Utility out on CodePlex.com.

I highly recommend you take a look at this FREE tool and even the source code to get a better understanding of SharePoint Innards. Run from your SharePoint Server and it will do most of the work for you around sites, users, reports.

“SUSHI is a powerful, user-friendly SharePoint application enabling you to accomplish common SharePoint administrative and development tasks. You can think of SUSHI as a Swiss army knife for SharePoint.
What does the name SUSHI stand for?
SUSHI = SharePoint Utility with a Smart, Helpful Interface”

Remotely Monitoring Web 2.0 Applications

Microsoft Research members Emre Kiciman, Ben Livshits and Himanshu Sharma have released a handy project...

Ajax View
The goal of the Ajax View project is to improve developer's visibility into and control over their web applications' behaviors on end-user's desktops.http://research.microsoft.com/projects/ajaxview/

*If Ben Livshits rings a bell it may be because of his Stanford projects:
http://suif.stanford.edu/~livshits/work.html
Which will be moving here soon:
http://research.microsoft.com/~livshits/

Emre has some very interesting Web 2.0 research papers you may be interested in:

My final entry today is not related to the "goodness" above...
Shaan has published an article many of you SharePoint developers will enjoy:

Coffee May Reduce Risk of Dementia

I knew it!

What took so long long to prove this? Big Smile

Drinking that daily cup of coffee has a new benefit besides jolting you awake in the morning.
It could also reduce your risk of dementia; it is being reported by BBC News.

According to a study in the Journal of Neuroinflammation...
Caffeine reduces the risk of dementia by blocking the damage cholesterol can inflict on the body.

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,345531,00.html

Study: http://www.jneuroinflammation.com/content/5/1/12/abstract

Note: I just had to create this post!
When people notice the tag above, "Espresso Junky"...
...they often ask how much Espresso I drink each day.
Well, I go through 2 pounds of beans each month, "Code Brown Espresso" from http://www.coffeeemergency.com/
I'm not a nut, no way! Simply enjoy fresh ground, strong, Espresso.
...so much that I don't drink any colas or alcoholic beverages, this way I can truly enjoy my one Vice.  Wink

Hey, I do look forward to having a cup with each of you someday...

Visual LINQ Query Builder

Soups up! Stick out tongue

Visual LINQ Query Builder
http://code.msdn.microsoft.com/vlinq

Visual LINQ Query Builder is an add-in to Visual Studio 2008 Designer that helps you visually build LINQ to SQL queries. Functionally it provides the same experience as, for instance the Microsoft Access Query Builder, but in the LINQ domain. The entire UI of this add-in uses Windows Presentation Foundation. The goal of this tool is to help users become more familiar with the LINQ syntax.

It's also a project that could help you to see how to create your own Visual Studio 2008 add-in using Windows Presentation Foundation.

Requirements

You will need to have Visual Studio 2008 installed. You can use the Visual LINQ Query Builder in any kind of project that supports LINQ to SQL.

Visual LINQ Query Builder is only supported with C# and VB.Net projects.

Additional LINQ resources

Zain, over at Second Life, just posted some of his "fundamental" LINQ learning resources:
http://blogs.msdn.com/zainnab/archive/2008/03/29/collection-of-linq-resources.aspx

While you're over there take a look at his Visual Studio 2008 / Framework 3.5 Learning Resources page:
http://blogs.msdn.com/zainnab/pages/visual-studio-2008-framework-3-5-learning-resources-page.aspx

I'm going to be posting LINQ resources from time to time.
Working with LINQ is something I'm really enjoying. (Honest)

If you'd like to pickup a study book I highly recommend LINQ in Action:
http://www.amazon.com/LINQ-Action-Fabrice-Marguerie/dp/1933988169/

LINQ is indeed a technology for Business use but it's also a great tool for hobbyists.
Take for example all the gaming sites on-line...
Many of those sites have public features they'd like to disconnect from their Database server.
LINQ is also great for that...Allow your users to vent in a Shoutbox but dump the comments into a disconnected XML file. Wink

By the way...You've seen these free Videos, right?

No, not that kind of attack...
But I have to admit "attack" has its own special meaning on the Internet. Wink

Today I'm back at blogging here.

Silverlight vs. Moxie?

Open source Showdown. . .

Microsoft has been sharing some cool technology with us, and we love MSFT for it, right? U know it baby!

Ajax, the .NET 3.0 framework and Silverlight, they're each awesome.

Adobe seems to be fighting back and will apparently make Flex available later this year via Open source.

Moxie is the latest codename for the soon to be released open source version of Adobe Flex and the SDK.

Seems Adobe will use the MPL for open-sourcing Flex and will also continue to make the Flex SDK and other Flex products available under existing commercial licenses.
This will allow new and existing partners/customers to choose.

Happy Easter

Happy Easter! (Feliz Páscoa!)

The Cradle of Hope
by Max Lucado

Christ rose first; then when Christ comes back, all his people will become alive again.
1 Corinthians 15:23

Let’s go to the tomb, for Jesus lies in the tomb.

Still. Cold. Stiff. Death has claimed its greatest trophy. He is not asleep in the tomb or resting in the tomb or comatose in the tomb; he is dead in the tomb. No air in his lungs. No thoughts in his brain. No feeling in his limbs. His body is as lifeless as the stone slab upon which he has been laid.

The executioners made sure of it. When Pilate learned that Jesus was dead, he asked the soldiers if they were certain. They were. Had they seen the Nazarene twitch, had they heard even one moan, they would have broken his legs to speed his end. But there was no need. The thrust of a spear removed all doubt. The Romans knew their job. And their job was finished. They pried loose the nails, lowered his body, and gave it to Joseph and Nicodemus.

Joseph of Arimathea. Nicodemus the Pharisee. Jesus had answered the prayer of their hearts, the prayer for the Messiah. As much as the soldiers wanted him dead, even more these men wanted him alive.

As they sponged the blood from his beard, don’t you know they listened for his breath? As they wrapped the cloth around his hands, don’t you know they hoped for a pulse? Don’t you know they searched for life?

But they didn’t find it.

So they do with him what they were expected to do with a dead man. They wrap his body in clean linen and place it in a tomb. Joseph’s tomb. Roman guards are stationed to guard the corpse. And a Roman seal is set on the rock of the tomb. For three days, no one gets close to the grave.

But then, Sunday arrives. And with Sunday comes light—a light within the tomb. A bright light? A soft light? Flashing? Hovering? We don’t know. But there was a light. For he is the light. And with the light came life. Just as the darkness was banished, now the decay is reversed. Heaven blows and Jesus breathes. His chest expands. Waxy lips open. Wooden fingers lift. Heart valves swish and hinged joints bend.

And, as we envision the moment, we stand in awe.

We stand in awe not just because of what we see, but because of what we know. We know that we, too, will die. We know that we, too, will be buried. Our lungs, like his, will empty. Our hands, like his, will stiffen. But the rising of his body and the rolling of the stone give birth to a mighty belief: “What we believe is this: If we get included in Christ’s sin-conquering death, we also get included in his life-saving resurrection. We know that when Jesus was raised from the dead it was a signal of the end of death-as-the-end. Never again will death have the last word. When Jesus died, he took sin down with him, but alive he brings God down to us” (Rom. 6:5–9 MSG).

VS SDK team released VS 2005 SDK 4.0 RTM

VS SDK team released VS 2005 SDK 4.0 RTM
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=73702

Visual Studio SDK Browser

As part of the Visual Studio product development team’s community initiatives, the team has built a Visual Studio SDK Browser to enhance the overall Visual Studio Extensibility development experience and to connect users with the community and online contents.
The Visual Studio SDK Browser is a key feature of Visual Studio 2005 SDK 4.0.

Package Load Analyzer

The Package Load Analyzer analyzes package load issues and then provides diagnostic information instead of a generic failure message. For example, if a package load issue was caused by a failed Package Load Key (PLK) verification, then the Package Load Analyzer will present that reason together with supporting data. This data may also help Microsoft Customer Support or VSPackage providers trouble-shoot package load issues on end user computers.

Toolbox Control Installer

Visual Studio 2005 introduced a change in the Toolbox that would have required a component vendor to create a VSPackage in order to make components appear in the Toolbox. Included in this release is a redistributable Toolbox installer package that component vendors can include in their Setup programs to simplify the deployment of their components. By using the Toolbox installer package, a vendor does not have to create a VSPackage to load components in the Toolbox. The redistributable Toolbox installer package is an .msi file, and the Controls sample demonstrates how to use it.

Updated TFS Contents

The Team Foundation Server samples and contents have been updated to include new sample and documentation.

DSL Tools Bug Fixes

This release contains bug fixes for the DSL Tools that were released in Visual Studio 2005 SDK 3.0. For details about the bug fixes, refer to the DSL Tools readme.htm, which is located in <Visual Studio SDK installation path>\2007.02\VisualStudioIntegration\Tools\DSLTools\.

Updated Setup Experience

This release has an entirely new Setup experience with a fresh look and feel. Installing the Help documentation is optional.
The documentation is now available online at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=76770&clcid=0x409.

New Toolbar Combo Box Sample

This sample shows how to create combo boxes on Visual Studio toolbars.
You can find this sample in the folder <Visual Studio SDK installation path>\2007.02\VisualStudioIntegration\Samples\IDE\CSharp\Reference.ComboBox\.

IronPython Bug Fixes

The IronPython sample now recognizes external line mapping comments. These follow the form of #ExternalSource(“filename”, lineNumber) and are ended with a #EndExternalSource comment. This format matches the format of the C# compiler and is used for a similar purpose. Errors reported on lines in an ExternalSource region will include file and line number information based on the ExternalSource comment.
This enables scenarios such as ASP.NET code-behind where the source code from the Web page is inserted into generated code in another file.

Sandcastle Documentation Compilers

Sandcastle is a tool that lets developers automate the creation of accurate managed class library documentation with a common look and feel. For more information about Sandcastle, see http://www.sandcastledocs.com.
Sandcastle produces documentation by using .NET Reflection on source assemblies.
As an option, developer source code comments provided by the Visual Studio XML Documentation Comments feature can be integrated.
The Sandcastle tools can be found in <Visual Studio SDK installation path>\2007.02\VisualStudioIntegration\Tools\Sandcastle\.

CoffeeNow you can use http://www.koders.com with the release of the VS SDK 4.0 to index all the code in the VS SDK and make it easily searchable.
