Tucker

Here is an email I just got today that should help you.

"Hello. I'm currently planning to deploy a secondary site, the secondary site will be deployed to my other domain. Do I need to extend the schema as I did when installing the primary server? (there is a Trust setup between the 2 domains)"

Answer:

"I have a similar setup in my lab and have also done this for many clients. Since your domains are in the same forest, you do not have to extend the schema. However, you should add the secondary server(s) to the System container for that domain with full control to that object and all child objects. It will write it’s MP information to that domain, but the boundaries to the domain where the primary resides. If you do extend the schema, many of the classes and attributes are already there, but 4 new ones would be created. In my opinion, you don’t need to extend the schema. Only one time per forest. If you ever have another forest, you must have at least 1 primary at the top of the hierarchy in that forest.

Ok, I have gone farther than you asked, but wanted to let you know the other things if they ever come up.

The clients of the secondary domain will need to know what MP to default to and having the server info in AD is needed, but as you know, secondary clients really get the site code of the primary, so the boundary list will be listed in that primary site’s System Management container.

Also, remember to add the secondary server as a local admin to the primary and add the primary as a local admin before you use the primary site to create a secondary site. Once they have established connection and are finished and the secondary shows “Active”, you can then move the system accounts to the proper SMS (SCCM) local groups. I find that by deploying the files across the domains is better than running the setup wizard from the secondary site. This simplifies the process because it will add the addresses for you if you request the wizard to do it.

There is a bigger footprint for sending 6 clients to a remote site than pushing a secondary because it trickles the bootstrap file in increments and unzips to install. When it asks you for the install location, you should enter a standard path similar to X:\Program Files\Microsoft Configuration Manager."

Does that help?

re: How to Properly Upgrade from SCCM Base to SP1

When you install SCCM onto a x64 system, it makes a new folder called Program Files (x32) or something along those lines. Just like when you install the client on a X64 server, you will open the control panel and not see the Config Mgr items. They are in a folder called (x32 applications) or something like that.

As for your second question, there are a lot of things that could be wrong or not installed. For every warning, double click it and it the bottom is a window that will point you to the URL of the prerequisite needed. You should ALWAYS fix every warning before installing even though warnings allow you to install. Errors on the other hand are stop requests and must be fixed because you can't install with Errors.

Now, I'm taking a guess, but did you install WSUS 3.0 SP1 before you installed SCCM? If you did, uninstall it, install WSUS 3.0 SP1 and then install the SUP role as outlined in the video in this series.

ReportViewer is a prerequisite and like I said, double click the warning and it will give you the URL to the updatae you need.

In everything I have seen while working with SCCM, Have your SCCM server running 2003 with SP1 to minimize the updates you will need.

Also, before you install, if you plan to have many sites, from the Bin folder run the setup.exe /download and specify a folder for the downloaded files. This will save you time. Also do the same for SP1. But these are just suggestions.

Once it's in the source directory, you add it in the OSD section of the console. Then in the TS you make, you call the .WIM as the OS to install. You want to capture an image. Right click on Task Sequence, choose the option for Capture Media. In the media file path, specify the url to the location like \\servername\share\OSD\Images\XPSP2.wim. Specify the boot image and the rest of the settings. That should get you started.
