In this Blogcast we look at how simple it is to install a new operating system. This video shows how to install Windows Vista from scratch. Many people will decide it's easier to upgrade rather than do a fresh installation. If your upgrade fails, chances are that you will have to install Vista as shown in this video.

Verify your computer can run Vista. The older your computer is, chances are that it may not meet the requirements. If you don't have at LEAST 16 GB of FREE space on your hard drive, don't even bother trying to install or upgrade Vista. No, you don't have to remove XP. You can install the CD and it will remove everything you have on your computer if you choose a clean install. I have done both several times and both work fine.

You can install any windows vista version you would like, but it will not work perfectly with 256mb ram. Here is a list of ram-requirements (recommended): Home basic: 512mb ram Home Premium: 1 gb ram Business: 1 gb ram Ultimate: 1 gb ram If you have less ram than recommended for your version of windows you will either get the blueScreen or programs will automaticly shutdown.

Purchasing new PC with Vista pre-installed. The salesam insists that if I downgrade to XP and later want to install Vista, I will need the Vista install DVD, and this costs an extra $100! If Vista is pre-installed, can't I just copy the Vista program off the virtual drive(VHD), or do a restore backup? Also will need the product key anyway. If I need the original DVD to install a fresh copy of Vista that only the store technicians can do, then I'm ok with paying the $100. I think it's a sales tactic to get extra $$. The system is an ACER AM5630 Quad6600 for $800 including 20' LCD. For $900 they add the DVD and $30 printer. The PC quaility may be an issue to see, but just asking on the Vista OS. TIA

to answer my own question, it turns the extra $100 service to make backups can be done straight from home on the desktop. I thought I was obtaining geniuine copies of Vista but in fact only backups that can only be used on the Acer PC. I got misled by the aggressive sales clerk and will complain to the store.
